A Day Up the River - Szentendre (Tuesday 9th September)

We temporarily left Budapest behind this morning, taking a river boat upstream to the small town/village of Szentendre.
As well as simply enjoying the cruise on a beautifully sunny day it gave us the opportunity to see Budapest from the river.

After an hour & a half we arrived in Szentendre.  The village was settled by Slavs, mostly Serbs but with some Croats & Greeks too, fleeing from the Turks in the 14th & 17th centuries.  The village thus has a Balkan feel with narrow streets & red-tiled roofs, as well as being home to distinctive Orthodox churches.  After many of the Slavs later left for the New World there place was taken by artists, giving the villa today a distinctly creative vibe.

We returned to Budapest this afternoon & the remainder of the day & evening was free for everyone to spend at their leisure - exploring, sightseeing, shopping, relaxing...

...or sampling Budapest's unique nightlife venues, the 'Ruin Pubs'!
A small group of brave souls took a short tour of the former Jewish Quarter, where derelict buildings have been repurposed into lively & sometimes quite bizarre night spots!
We may not have 'raised the roof' but we certainly raised the average age!
